Creating A Value Scale
9 steps
What you’ll need
Pencil
An Eraser
A Light Source
Value= the dark and light marks that come together to make a line drawing look 3D
1
Begin with your value scale by making a rectangle.
2
Divide your box into 6-8 sections or more
3
Fill each box from light to dark by gradually putting more pressure on your pencil.
4
When artists draw they add value (darks and lights) to a line drawing to make it more 3D.
5
You can also make a continuous value scale.
6
(Depending what you’re going for...) try to apply even pressure for a smooth look
7
Keep a value scale nearby to help you remember all values from light to dark and each in between.
8
You may need more than one value/gray scale to practice that control. Give it a try & have fun!
