Sketch out an irregular shaped tree
Add the irregular shaped gaps in the middle section.
Make sure the edges are jagged to achieve Realism.
Complete the sketch with light gaps
Saturate your watercolor paper with water
Start with lightest values in the center.
Add darker values around the edges.
Add even darker values to the outer edge.
Pull out some of the color from the middle section of the tree.
Paint on masking fluid to preserve the color underneath.
Let it dry!
Paint the silhouette
Start with one color first!
Paint black on the trunk and ground
Paint black in the center
Add bits of colors before the outside dries.
Dab the edges and pull out with a clean brush.
Continue dabbing and pulling all the way around the tree.
Keep your paint brush clean as you pull the color out.
What if you can’t finish in one sitting??
Re-wet the inside and re-paint the edges.
Continue adding dark color to the edges before the interior dries.
Continue adding strokes outward with a clean brush.
Rub off the masking fluid.
